We often associate leadership with a title, a position in the organization.
That’s not how I see it.
My conviction is that leadership happens everywhere, and that everyone can embody it.
In a team, in a meeting, in a project, in a conflict.
And often, precisely at the moment when no one wants to deal with what is happening.
This is exactly what the Co-Active model shows:
Leadership is multidimensional.
It is not just about “taking the lead.”
It is about choosing a useful position, in the moment, in service of the collective.
In Co-Active Leadership, there are five possible dimensions: in front / behind / beside / in the field / within.
And this is what changes everything: you can embody them without being a CEO.
You can embody them without being a manager.
You can embody them without having formal authority.
Because leadership is about stance, not status.
You can express your leadership in front, even without a title, by proposing a clear direction.
You can express your leadership behind, by supporting someone so they can grow.
You can express your leadership beside, by co-creating instead of isolating yourself.
You can express your leadership in the field, by naming what is unspoken and blocking everyone.
And you can express your leadership within, by regulating yourself so you can respond rather than react.
What I observe is that many people limit themselves.
Not because they are “avoiding” responsibility, but because they don’t even know it is possible.
They wait for “the right role” to reveal their leadership.
When in reality, leadership is precisely what we do from where we are.
The real question is how to express your leadership at any given moment.
It is knowing how to shift dimensions, depending on what is needed.
But it is also noticing the one you tend to avoid.
Because the cost of staying stuck in a single posture is huge.
You exhaust yourself, you disengage, you feed complexity instead of helping resolve it.
And when we understand this, something opens.
We move out of the idea: “I can’t.”
And we enter a different question: “what is useful, here and now?”
And in which dimension can I choose to express my leadership, in this specific context?
That is where the field of possibilities becomes immense.
And you, in your daily work, in which dimension could you express your leadership more fully: in front, behind, beside, in the field, or within?
