A neutral coach does not exist. And that is not a problem.
A coach is a human being. They have a story, filters, reactions.
Through their questions, their silences, their mirrors…they influence the direction.Always.
So neutrality?Either it is an illusion.Or it is a cold, rigid, disconnected stance.
That is not the real issue.
The problem is not the lack of neutrality. It is the lack of awareness of one’s non-neutrality.
In a session, I may feel…irritation, empathy, judgment sometimes,or the desire to help, to push, to save.
All of that is there.
I do not deny it.I do not pour it onto the client.I use it — or not.
In service of the client.
That is the professional stance.
Because clients are not looking for a neutral coach. They are looking for a presence. An energy.A way of seeing.
What they do notice, however, is something else:projection, imposition, and judgment.
It is a subtle balance:being fully present, without taking up the space.
And in team coaching, it becomes even more visible.
The coach is part of the system they are supporting. They influence it.They are influenced by it.They are never truly outside it.
So the question is not:“How can I be neutral?”
But:“What belongs to me?”“And what is in service of the client… or the system?”
Being a professional coach is not about being neutral. It is about being aware.Lucid.Responsible.
This takes work.In supervision.Again and again.
Because the problem is not that a coach is not neutral. It is when they think they are.
